Where can I buy Beginners photo lighting equipment for cheap?

I want to take some photos with a regular point and shoot but I want the soft lighting that studios have. Can you suggest some brands and models of equipment and if possible provide links to websites that sell this stuff...thanks

1. The least expensive lighting is found at Home Depot. They are 500 watt construction lamps (about $40). To soften the light you will have to set something in front of the lights. The next step will cost closer to $150. A Lowel Tota-light with 750 Watt lamp, umbrella and stand is what I use when on location. You can later add a 42 inch 5 in 1 reflector for fill (under $100) You will also need a background stand (Savage makes one for under $100) for hanging rolls of background paper or four yard lengths of cloth from the $1 table at your favorite yardage store or Wal-Mart
