  1. When first learning how to light, using incandescent lighting is the easiest to see how the light covers the subject. It is the lighting first used by photo students at the major photo schools. Link to some inexpensive kits. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=sort&A=search&Q=&sortDrop=Price%3A+Low+to+High&bl=&atl=Brand_Lowel&pn=1&st=categoryNavigation&mnp=0.0&mxp=0.0&sv=2247&shs=&ac=&fi=all&pn=1&ci=2247&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr= You will also want something to hang a background on .... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=search&A=search&Q=&sb=bs%2Cupper%28ds%29&sq=asc&ac=&bsi=&ci=1396&shs=&at=Brand_Savage&fakeSubmitButton=Submit+Query
  2. Check the Oct. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine (shutterbug.com). It was their annual lighting issue and you can read it on-line if your local library doesn't have a copy. The Dec. 2007 issue of Shutterbug has an article titled "Top Photography Books of 2007". Some titles you might find useful are: "Portrait Photographer's Handbook, 3rd. Edition" by Bill Hunter "Professional Children's Portrait Photography: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers" by Lou Jacobs, Jr. "Professional Portrait Posing: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers" by Michelle Perkins. Also, any books you can find by Monte Zucker will be very useful. He was a Master Portrait Photographer. One more excellent reason to subscribe to at least one photography magazine. Hope this helps and good luck.
  3. A good site for lighting techniques is: http://www.dg28.com/index.htm Beyond that, you don't have to spend a ton of money to light a photo indoors with a few inexpensive flashes - think Nikon SB-28s or Vivitar 283/285s - a radio remote and some optical slaves. It really depends on what effects you're trying to achieve.
