What lighting do you need at a home photo shoot?

I am doing a home photo shoot and am not sure how to do the lighting as I have no lights. Is there anything else you can use as lights as i have quite a low budget. Also what is the bast background to use?

1. GO INTO THE DARK and take a photo, with a torch lightly shining over someone/something. It will give a spooky effect. Something like this...http://imgs.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2005/01/22/ho_moma_5.jpg
2. Depending on the mood you're trying to convey Ex:(candles,flames=romance,spooky,mystery).Since your on a budget go to a dollar store or something and get you a king size bed sheet use it as is or throw some paint on it to give yourself a pattern.
3. If you have a window, and it is day, you light. If you table lamps, you have light. If you have ceiling light, you have light. The question is what can your camera do? Do you have a DSLR, SLR, point and shoot, disposable film camera. Built in flash? 4. Windows make grand big soft lights and if direct sun nice hard lights as well. IT is easy to pick up a sheet of white form core for a reflector at the store and use a kitchen chair with some masking tape to hold it in place to fill in the shadows. The wall of the room is always a good start for a background. Just watch for the power outlets they tend to mess up the image. Paint is cheep so you can change the colors and while your at it freshen up the whole room look after the shoot.. just remember, one splotch of paint is not all that nice later so only do that if your willing to do the whole room after the shoot.
5. Are you photographing people or product?
